“Tell me, please. What do you think of this, professors?”

Geoff looked at Susan, and she looked back, both clearly thinking they had entered a madhouse that was frightening because of their uncertainty about the children and whether refusing to comply with their Japanese captor might be dangerous to them all. And now they were expected to provide literary criticism. Or was it a test of some kind? Clearly Kanehara was serious, even if mad.

“I suppose I have had some exposure to haiku, as a part of my reading during building the Japanese garden,” said Geoff. “But I really know very little. I’m sure your knowledge is much greater than mine.”

“Yes, but what do you think of it?”

“Well, I don’t know really. If you told me it was a classic sixteenth or seventeenth-century haiku translated into English, I would believe you. It seems to have all the requisite qualities, and rather nicely leads into that kind of calm and silence of the mind that is achieved by the best haiku.”

“That is good. Thank you. Yes, very good. Now please read the next poem.”

Unrequited love

And is she thinking of me now?

And the answer is no, She is thinking of her children by another

And they are thinking of, the oldest, a hamster, the next, riding

  a dragon,

And, three, the youngest, angry revenge.
